Building Research Capacity in Six Fraser Health Teams
The following six new research teams are supported by Susann Camus and Matthew Queree, Research Team Planning Strategists, who are supported by funding from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research.
A Good Death The Fraser Health multidisciplinary Quality of Dying Research Team, led by Carolyn Tayler, brings together decision makers, clinicians, health care practitioners, academics from the University of Victoria and McGill University, and health policy makers specializing in palliative care and united by a common interest in evaluating and validating the Fraser Health quality of dying tool. Healthcare Workers Safety Toolkit The Fraser Health Healthcare Safety Research Team includes disability management and safety specialists, ergonomists and nurses, as well as an epidemiologist affiliated with Simon Fraser University. All are deeply interested in reducing musculoskeletal injury and resulting time losses by developing, implementing, evaluating and promoting a novel safety toolkit to address the unique safety needs of healthcare workers. Rehabilitation Services The Rehabilitation Services Group, led by Scott Brolin, brings together decision-makers, clinicians, and health care practitioners from OT, PT, SLP, and Audiology. Members are developing multiple research proposals and multiple academic collaborations to study the effects of technology on improving balance and perception, the effects of pre-operative education to prevent strength losses after breast cancer surgery, and the physical therapy outcomes to inform discharge after joint replacement surgery. Mental Health and Addictions The Mental Health and Addictions (MH&A) Research Group includes managers, clinicians, and leaders from across Fraser Health representing all areas of MH&A service. The group is capitalizing on pilot research already completed on post-partum depression, as well as developing research proposals to investigate the role of stigma and discrimination in health services. Collaborations and partnerships are being discussed currently with researchers at UBC, SFU and the Mental Health Commission of Canada.
